B 12

What is Vitamin B12?

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) is an essential vitamin needed for:

  • Brain and nerve development

  • Red blood cell formation

  • DNA synthesis

Why is B12 used in Autism?

Some children with autism may have:

  • Low B12 levels

  • Poor methylation (a biochemical process important for brain function)

  • Gut absorption problems

B12 is used as a supportive therapy, not a cure.

Possible Benefits in Autism

Research suggests that B12 may help some children with:
✅ Speech improvement
✅ Better eye contact
✅ Reduced irritability and hyperactivity
✅ Improved sleep
✅ Better attention and learning
✅ Reduced repetitive behaviors (in some cases)

What is it?

  • Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is a water-soluble vitamin essential to the body.

  • Tablets may contain various forms of B12, such as cyanocobalamin, methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, or adenosylcobalamin

  • The tablet provides this vitamin in a concentrated dosage (for example, 500 µg, 1000 µg, etc.) which is much higher than the typical daily requirement

Mechanism & Role in the Body

  • B12 is required for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and nervous system function.

  • It helps maintain the myelin sheath (a protective covering of nerves) and supports neurological health.

  • Also involved in protein, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism

  • The body stores B12 (especially in the liver), and excess is excreted in urine because it is water-soluble.

Indications / Uses

A B12 tablet may be used when:

  • Dietary intake is insufficient (for example, in strict vegetarians or vegans).

  • There is impaired absorption of B12 in the digestive system (due to conditions like pernicious anemia, gastrointestinal surgery, Crohn’s disease, etc.).

  • To prevent or treat B12 deficiency, which can lead to anemia and neurological problems.

Dosage & Strengths

  • B12 tablets come in various strengths (e.g. 500 µg, 1000 µg, etc.)

  • The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for most adults is about 2.4 µg per day.

  • Because absorption is limited (especially in those with absorption problems), tablets often deliver much more than RDA, so that enough is absorbed.

Side Effects & Safety

  • Generally considered safe when taken in appropriate doses.

  • Possible side effects include: headache, nausea, diarrhea, itching, or a tingling sensation.

  • High doses in healthy individuals rarely lead to serious toxicity because excess is excreted.

  • However, in certain medical conditions or when interacting with other medications, caution is needed.
